Minerals and Solutions Minerals Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a very common and versatile mineral applied in multiple products and solutions. It is obtained from naturally occurring rocks like limestone, marble and chalk and it is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth and accounts for about 4% of the Earth’s crust.
Calcium Carbonate is a chemical compound with the formula CaCO3 formed by three main elements: carbon, oxygen, and calcium.
Calcium Carbonate is naturally high in whiteness, has low toxicity, low solubility and can be dispersed in water to form high solid slurries with excellent rheology.
GCC is produced by mechanically grinding limestone or other calcium carbonate-rich rocks into a fine powder. The grinding process can be adjusted to achieve different particle sizes depending on the desired application.
Artemyn combines high-quality feed materials, state of the art processing to generate a broad portfolio of GCC products differentiated primarily by particle size.
Due to its cost-efficiency and whiteness, GCC is a widely used filler and coating pigment applied to extend the volume of more expensive materials and to improve properties such as opacity, printability and thickness.
GCC serves several industries, such as the paper and board industry, but also other market areas including paints, plastics, rubbers, construction and agriculture.
PCCs are high purity synthetic carbonates produced from the reaction between lime, water and carbon dioxide and the subsequent reaction of both purified components in a chemical reactor.
When PCC is produced Artemyn controls the chemical and physical properties of the particles, which enables us to optimize products according to customer requirements on e.g. particle size, particle size distribution, surface area and surface chemistry.
This results in products with different properties with different crystal structures and morphologies ranging from aggregated scalenohedral calcite to discrete crystals of rhombohedral calcite or needle-like aragonitic PCC.
PCC products are used in several applications, and in the paper and board industry they are used as fillers or coating pigments where they provide unmatched optical performance. PCCs can also be used in a wide variety of other applications including plastics, paints and coatings, pharmaceutical applications and personal care.
