Coatings for Paper and Board

The role of the coating is to cover the base paper fibres to provide a uniform surface which improves the final printed quality.

More about coating

Coatings are also used to

  • make the paper or board brighter/whiter
  • contribute to the opacity or optical coverage
  • be designed to deliver the desired finish, e.g. matt, silk or gloss

Increasingly the role of the coating is evolving to bring additional functionality, such as barrier performance, release properties or even laser marking.

Mineral types and their physical and chemical characteristics play a pivotal role in dictating coating performance. The particle size, shape and brightness of coating pigments can directly influence performance when used as sole pigments or in mixed component systems.

Over a century of expertise

Artemyn offers a broad and well established range of ground and precipitated calcium carbonate coating pigments (Carbital™ and Opti-Cal™) as well as the worlds premium range of coating grade kaolins (Capim™) which are suitable for all applications.

We also have a range of recycled coating grade carbonates consisting of at least 40% recycled minerals which provides a sustainable alternative to conventional coating pigments.

We have in-depth knowledge, built up over many years, of the best product fit for different end uses and how different products are best used together in multicomponent systems. We can support our customers with technical advice and laboratory support in order to identify the best solutions to meet their needs.
